Overview
"If you've heard of fish referred to as brain food, you can thank DMAE. This substance is naturally produced in the brain, but DMAE is
also present in anchovies, salmon and sardines, boosting the production of acetylcholine, which is important for proper mental
functions."
- WebMD®
Technical Description
"This naturally occurring amino alcohol is produced in minuscule amounts by the brain, with higher concentrations being typically found
in anchovies and sardines.
"Known primarily as a precursor to choline and acetylcholine (chemicals in the brain responsible for nerve
transmissions and cognitive function), DMAE has been used most predominantly to improve memory and focus while stimulating neural
activity.
"Many researchers believe that it may serve an anti-aging function by increasing the body’s capacity to produce acetylcholine
– a deficiency commonly associated with memory loss."
- Medscape
Smart Drugs
"Why wait decades for science to hand us "smart" drugs and nutrients that supposedly enhance brain function when we may already have
them at hand? That's the philosophy of Steven Fowkes, the 44-year-old editor of the newsletter Smart Drug News. These medications
include deprenyl (for Parkinson's disease), vasopressin (used to treat diabetes), piracetam (for learning disabilities), and others
that are available only in Mexico and Europe.
"Also on the list of smart drugs are a host of amino acids that are building blocks for
neurotransmitters--such as tryptophan, tyrosine, and choline--as well as dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) and nicotinamide adenine
dinucleotide (NADH), nutrients that seem to enhance cognitive function."
- MedicineNet
Cautions
"Taking too much can cause side effects such as restlessness, irritability, and tension in the neck muscles."
- WebMD®
[From a posting on a medical blog:] "Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) was a prescription drug for ADHD-like symptoms until the 1980s when it was withdrawn because of lack of
proof of effectiveness and safety, and it is now available as a dietary supplement. As was true in the 1980s, there still isn't enough
evidence about effectiveness or safety to recommend it."
- WebMD®
Manufacturer's Description
DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) is a natural amino alcohol that is found in minute quantities in the brain. It is generally regarded as a
precursor to choline, which is needed for the brain to produce acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in nerve signal transmission
and healthy brain function.
Taken as a maintenance supplement, it works synergistically with other "smart nutrients" like Ginkgo biloba, GABA, Phosphatidyl Serine
and L-Tyrosine, or can be taken alone.
