Echinacea
 Commonly
know as the coneflower, it is a wildflower. Today this flower is not only an ornamental in many gardens,
but also a cultivated herb. Echinacea is best known for it's immune enhancing ability. It contains a diverse
range of active components affecting different aspects of immune function. Echinacea reportedly elevates
serum white blood cell counts when they are low. Studies have also shown that Echinacea polysaccharides bind
to receptors on the cell surface of white blood cells and literally turn these cells on
One of the most popular uses of Echinacea is in the treatment of the common cold. "In one recent study, 108 patients
with colds received either an extract of the fresh-pressed juice of Echinacea (4 ml twice daily) or placebo for
8 weeks (40). The number of patients remaining healthy: Echinacea 35.2%, placebo 25.9%. When infections did occur
in patients receiving Echinacea , they were less severe and resolved quicker. Patients showing evidence of weakened
immune system benefited the most from Echinacea." |
